Operating room scheduling under deadlines and emergency surgery disruptions

The research is performed in collaboration with Toronto General Hospital, which is part of the University Health Network (UHN). There are several operating rooms in Toronto General Hospital and there is a heavy load of surgeries including transplants and emergency cases. The purpose of this research is to develop a computerized decision support tool that will aid hospital administrators in more efficient scheduling of operating rooms in Toronto General Hospital. We use computer simulation to analyze the effect of different factors on operating room utilization and improve the utilization ratio.

In hospitals with a fixed budget, such as TGH, operating rooms represent a bottleneck. Operating rooms consume invaluable resources and a large amount of hospitals' annual budget. Therefore, many hospitals may benefit from tools and methods for effective scheduling of operating rooms to reduce costs while maintaining a good quality of care.
